UN Court: Japan ordered to stop whaling!
Huge ruling against Japan's "scientific" whaling operation.
http://www.news.com.au/national/aust...-1226870210553
Quote:
The United Nation’s court ordered a halt to the issuing of whaling permits until the program has been revamped.
The ICJ, by 12 votes to four, said Japan had not acted in compliance with its obligations under the international whaling convention.
Australia had asked the court to ban Japan’s annual hunt on the basis it was not “for purposes of scientific research’’ as allowed under Article 8 of the 1946 International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling.

Huntingwhale comment, comment Huntingwhale?
Seriously though, huge victory for the many people that fought against the Japanese "scientific research" loop hole....guess this means no more Whale Wars on tv doesn't it?

This kind of ruling will test the UNs legitimacy. If Japan refuses to comply or backs out of the treaty what will the U.N. do? Can it push sanctions through ? Because if it cant enforce this ruling it erodes the authority of the U.N.

The most recent Whale Wars season was a 2 hour special, no episodes.
It aired back in December if I recall. Hopefully they will continue to have specials (Hopefully no more chasing of the Nisshin Maru or any of the Japanese fleet).

Generalized thanks to the OP for posting and the Australians for forcing the UN to take some action. Anyone who has watched 'The Cove' can see just how far Japan's whaling 'industry' has fallen into undefendable scumbaggery. I can't believe it's taken this long for the UN to close this loophole.

I'm going to go ahead and prove my absolute ignorance here:
What the hell are they doing with all these whales? I mean, I dont think anyone eats them, so what industry are they supplying them to?

Food mostly. 'Whale Bacon' is a good Japanese item, and I really enjoyed whale jerky as well.
Blubber Oil used to be useful too, but is pretty much replaced by other things now. Was used as transmission fluid, for lamp burning, in margarine, and soap, stuff like that. Pretty much made obsolete by vegetable oil and kerosene, in most applications.

I think if people need lamp oil they probably cant afford whale lamp oil. While it may be clean burning it seems like it would be outrageously expensive. Like, so expensive that getting electricity and a lightbulb is a vastly superior alternative.

So is it just a luxery to have whale oil lamps about your property? Not sure I understand why we need to be hunting whales at all. Do people eat them? Do people still eat whale blubber? Can you even eat whale meat? What would it be like? Their mammals that live in the sea, do they have fishy filets or is it more like beef or something? Lots of questions.

I think Japan is just killing whales preemptively. Eliminating them before they can organize and march on Tokyo.
What do the Japanese know that we dont??

Depends on the cut and species. The rib meat generally almost tastes like beef steak, except very very tender with soft thin fibres. Other pieces of the whale is more compared to Horse meat (which is almost like beef as well, but sweeter and with denser fibres) It's also pretty good for you, other than the regular ocean creature issues like possible toxicity and mercury.

Whale meat is (was?) a culturally important staple in many Japanese whaling towns
