Interesting to hear Wideman being out for the rest of the season. I hope he takes all the time to recover and return to his early season form next year.
I wonder if they'll keep Wotherspoon for the remaining 13 games, or swap him with another youngster like Breen for a 'proper' look in order to save that first year ELC.

What happened to Wideman, did he break his wrist again?

Not sure what you mean by "save that first year ELC". Wotherspoon is already playing pro, the first year is going to be gone off his ELC whether he stays up or not. That 9 game rule only applies to junior eligible players in their 18 or 19 year old season.

Wideman has been listed as with an 'upper body injury' over the last month, wonder if that hasn't to do with the surgery he had to deal with in November/December and there were some consequences afterwards.

Out of thanks, but thanks.
Edit: Or not?

Would love if they bought out Wideman but I get that we need him to get to the floor for next year

What is the penalty for not meeting the cap floor?

Ville Leino is transferred to your roster and granted a full NMC.

Seriously though, good question.

Better trade for Luongo in the offseason!

Don't quote me on this but I thought under old agreement the penalty was fines up to $5 million. After that if team still did not comply it could be loss of draft picks. I believe it could even result into loss of games if not reached.

Granted that's under old agreement.

I personally wouldn't like to see a Wideman buyout, regardless of our need to hit the cap floor. 3 years left (after this season) on his contract at 5.25 per. Not exactly in the Redden/Gomez territory of boat anchors. He's certainly looked awful at times, but actually played quite well with Russell at the beginning of the year. He never really seemed to recover after the first injury. Still a guy who should be able to play at least 4-5 defenseman minutes plus powerplay time. With the ability (and Burke's willingness) to retain salary, he could be a very useful trade piece at 3-4 million. A buyout would be a waste of an asset.

Why?

A) he is an NHL defenceman
B) we do not have a replacement for him
C) with retained salary (as someone pointed out I just noticed), he is a valuable asset
D) he hasn't always been great in his own zone, but he was a lot better than i expected to start the season and I'm in the camp that believes he can probably return to form with some time to fully recover in the offseason

Sideman didn't shoot at all when he came back the first time from his injury. Let it heal up properly and come back next season.

Thanks for the update.

With Ramo very close to returning will it be Ortio sent down, or the return of the Mac?

I heard Hudler will be back vs Nashville. So with Huds and Agostino in the lineup, I supposed Hanowski will be back in Abby and another player Westgarth maybe to sit out?

Someone posted a quote from Burke somewhere in a thread that said when Ramo came back that Ortio would stay up. Not sure if he meant for rest of season?

Don't really consider him an asset. I know he puts up about a .5 PPG, but I don't see how he's become better for this team. I'd rather overpay a new FA, like Greene or Morris instead. And I like Wotherspoon better, Wotherspoon doesn't make as much mistakes as Wideman.

I hope I am wrong, and Wideman does better than what he did this year. He does eat up a lot of minutes, and I still like that .5 PPG. Plus, his injury gave us a spot for rookies to show what they've got. Honestly, I am just in the middle with Wideman.

I sure hope it's for the rest of the season. Ortio is the future - keep him here and have him compete with Ramo in a 1/1A tandem like they were doing with Ramo & Berra. Send Mac back to Abbotsford asap.

Just because you think he's wrong for the team doesn't make him not an asset. Right now, our 2014 first round pick isn't helping us win any games, but it's still an asset. It was value, just like Wideman has value. Sure, I would be all for retaining salary and trading him for picks or young players then signing a better UFA, assuming one is willing to sign. But buying him out would just be a waste of both the owners' money and a tradeable asset.
