Icon36 Rangers Sign Dan Girardi 6 Years, 5.5 AAV

Big RH defenseman gets paid. Not too bad AAV either.

Tweets:

Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger 7m
6 years, $5.5 per for Girardi staying with Rangers.

Pierre LeBrun ‏@Real_ESPNLeBrun 2m
Further to @DarrenDreger, Girardi deal includes full NMC in first 3 yrs and modified NTC in final 3

Could be just you. 5.5 is pretty fair for both sides. I feel like 4.5 would be a home town discount. With the cap rising a fair bit next year the extra million shouldn't hamper the Rangers much.

I wouldn't have signed him for this long. He's falling apart and already declining. It is the going rate though so I understand the deal.

5.5M is a home discount Nice job by both sides to get fair value.

This is a good deal for the Rangers seeing that money really isn't ever an issue with them and as long as the cap rises they will be spending up to it. I personally don't think he's all the special for that money and term but you have to keep your good players and that's the going rate.

Rangers needed to keep him as they likely lose Marc Staal to the Canes when he goes UFA (assumption)

A very fair deal in the first 3 years, but I guess the cost of keeping it away from 6M is because of the extra term. I can't see there being a particularly big issue with this kind of deal from a top 4 guy.

Fantastic deal in my books. Little downside, lots of upside.

Would someone please explain why $33 million over 6 years is great for a 30 year old Girardi. This is Duncan Keith type money for a player that is no better(and far older) than T.J Brodie.

^ in that vein, I wouldn't be butthurt one bit if Brodie's extension had similar numbers.

Duncan Keith is worth way more than "Duncan Keith" money for starters. Also not sure how Brodie is comparable to Girardi as a player, but as an UFA Girardi was going to get way more than a good RFA defenseman.

Also with a rising cap, paying 5.5 for a Dman who will probably be on your top pairing, or at least in your top 4 for the forseeable future is a good deal

Brodie is 23. Giordano is a better comparison.

I would give Gio 6 x 6 if he were re-signing today, no questions asked (though I would prefer 4 x 6)
That is simply going to be the new reality for free agents

I think the term is 2 years too long myself. Good defenceman but he will be 30 when this contract starts. 3 years from now is he still going to be a top 3 D?
