Default Subway to remove "yoga mat" chemical from bread

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/...ticle16728365/

Quote:
Following pressure from a petition launched by food blogger Vani Hari, Subway announced on Thursday that it will be removing the chemical azodicarbonamide from the bread in its sandwiches.

As ABC News reported, the World Health Organization has linked the chemical, legal in Canada and the United States, to asthma, allergies and respiratory issues.

“It helps … produce the air within the foam of a yoga mat,” Hari told ABC News. “It does the same thing for bread.”

The petition Hari launched has garnered more than 50, 000 signatures, although Subway said was “already in the process of removing azodicarbonamide as part of our bread improvement efforts.”

Pretty sensationalist headline, most of the crap people eat is much worse. Adding chemicals to food to make it easier is nothing new.

That said, are people really surprised? Like a fast food joint that 'bakes bread daily in store' is really going to pay minimum wage for someone to ensure that they have perfect air pockets in the bread?

Kind of misleading. The way it says it, it is like that's what yoga mats are made out of.

You could also make the statement, "Subway uses 'industrial ethanol' chemical in breads" and no one would complain about the yeast in the bread.

I'm going to go home and have a bit of my yoga mat and see if it compares to Subway bread.

That signature smell is the biggest reason I don't go to Subway. There's just something remarkably off-putting about it.

This reminds me of the ridiculous "margarine is only one chemical away from plastic" rhetoric.

Is there a good reason why this chemical was used in their bread in the first place? Is water, flour, salt and yeast just not good enough?

Well considering Subway was here before yoga mats I'd say the yoga people should stop using subs in their yoga mats.

Somehow I doubt that the sight of Jared in yoga pants would make anyone hungry for Subway.

Consistency and ease. No way someone making minimum wage is going to be willing and/or know how to get that bread perfect every time. Kneading, benching, perfect measurements for gluten structure. Screw that, add chemicals and just make it easier and cheaper.

Ah, yes, the old "chemicals" blanket fear.

Did you guys know that the same chemical used in dairy products and common sauces is used for fracking? Petition!!!!

But then again, fear is maybe justified in this case since yoga mats and subway buns do taste remarkably similar. Or so I've heard.

This has pretty much turned into a meme at this point. Nothing like overreacting just because the internet told you too.

I wonder how many anti-canola oil petitions are out there. I don't want to injest something used in making fuel or lubricants!!
