February 12
Today is a quiet day for Olympic events and Canada specifically. Here's your schedule of Canadians (MST). Premiere events, or events where we have competitors who have medal shots (or outside shots) will be bolded.
[12:00 AM] Alpine Skiing: Women's Downhill - Larisa Yurkiw will represent Canada in the fast and exciting Alpine race. She has two Top 10 finishes this year but is unlikely to medal.
[3:00 AM] Snowboarding: Ladies' Half-Pipe Qualifications - Alexandra Duckworth, Katie Tsuyuki, and Mercedes Nicoll will attempt to qualify for the finals. With no top 5 finishes on the year, it is highly unlikely that Canada will medal, but hopefully we can get one or two competitors into the final.
[3:00 AM] Curling: Women's - Canada's (2-0) 3rd round draw versus Great Britain (1-1).
[5:30 AM] Women's Hockey - The final round-robin game of our tournament is the big one, versus the United States in a likely match-up of the finals.
[7:00 AM] Speed Skating: Men's 1000m - Denny Morrison leads a group of four Canadians in this event. Morrison has fallen back in this event in recent years and has dealt with injuries, so him winning a medal would be a surprise, but not impossible.
[7:15 AM] Luge: Men's Doubles - Canada's duo of Tristan Walker and Justin Snith are both young and improving each year, with one podium finish this year and up to 7th in the World. However, the teams ahead of them are so strong including two German teams that it will be very hard to medal.
[8:00 AM] Curling: Men's - Brad Jacobs' struggling rink (1-2) will look to rebound versus the home team Russians (0-3).
[8:45 AM] Figure Skating: Pairs' Free Skate - Duhamel/Radford and Moscovitch/Moore-Towers sit 5th and 6th respectively going into the free skate. They will have to move past some tough teams to fight for Bronze.
Other:
Ladies' Half-Pipe Semi-finals (8 AM), Finals (10:30 AM).
Nordic Combined Individual Gundersen Rounds at 2:30 AM and 5:30 AM.

Denny Morrison is someone I am really rooting for. Pretty cool that Junio gave up his spot for Morrison.
This women's hockey game against the USA will be a good one though.

Just need to be up for 10am hockey. Geetting the feeling the Swedes could decimate the Czech's 5-1 or something. The Swiss could shut out the Latvians knowing how well they've played in recent years.
Kind of a weak day otherwise; I'll watch pretty much anything other than curling or women's hockey, they're just not my cup of tea.

That is a lot of wrecks. Yikes. I missed the update on the girl who really smacked her head when she fell, before she hit the fence. Anyone else catch it?

Yeah, she was down for a bit but eventually got up and made it down the course by her own will.

Slovenia! That's not a country I'm used to hearing about.
Well I guess they already have a few medals these Olympics.
And dammit, I told myself I was going to go to bed earlier, and here I am up watching skiing at 3 am

So if they tie for the gold. Does that mean two gold medals are handed out and then just one bronze? No silver?

Yurkiw was sure all over the place on that run. I thought she was going to end up on the outside of the flags.
This tie is super exciting. I love downhill. It's one of the events where being a medal favourite is far from a sure thing (Mancuso and Hoefl-Riesch both out).

I looked up Slovenia's medal count for the Olympics, and it looks like they've never won a gold medal in the winter games. Could be an exciting day for them.
