Default Standings/Team Rankings over the last 20 years?

I saw the thread a week or so back that showed the Team Standings by points over the last 8 years or so but I've been curious what the Standings/Rankings would be over the last 20 years and I'll admit that I don't have the spreadsheet skills to create a proper list, especially with how the expansion teams come into the frey.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sure, I've got nothing else to do. Plugging away now, give me a bit.

I'll do last 20 completed seasons, so not including YTD 13-14. But including all seasons including shortened "complete" seasons due to labor. Sound OK?

I'm also just gonna summarize each season by points. Not going to bother showing Wins, Losses, etc. each season. Though each season will be on a tab.

Should have said "done half the seasons". It gets a little sticky as teams drop off from expansion. More time consuming. Working on 96-97 now.

Things overheard as I put this together:

"Oh thanks for completely changing the naming style in 96-97 NHL. "

"Florida had 92 points one season?!"

3 seasons to go!

OK, so here's the list of teams and point totals. Teams shown are in their current locations. So the Winnipeg in the list is the franchise including the Thrashers totals, the Phoenix listed includes the Winnipeg totals from the WHA merger until the move, etc. I'm sure you guys can figure it out.

Including just the raw point totals obviously penalizes the expansion teams, as they did not play as many games.

Code:
Team Total
DETROIT 2076
NEW JERSEY	1911
DALLAS 1839
PHILADELPHIA	1824
COLORADO	1811
PITTSBURGH	1782
BOSTON 1768
VANCOUVER	1759
ST. LOUIS	1745
BUFFALO 1736
WASHINGTON	1710
TORONTO 1693
MONTRÉAL	1685
SAN JOSE	1675
NY RANGERS	1668
CHICAGO 1662
CALGARY 1645
OTTAWA 1612
PHOENIX 1601
LOS ANGELES	1584
CAROLINA	1560
ANAHEIM 1543
EDMONTON	1505
FLORIDA 1448
NY ISLANDERS	1435
TAMPA BAY	1424
NASHVILLE	1186
MINNESOTA	1000
WINNIPEG	942
COLUMBUS	858
So here's the same list, sorted by PPG.

Code:
Team Total PPG
DETROIT 2076 1.252
NEW JERSEY	1911 1.153
DALLAS 1839 1.109
PHILADELPHIA	1824 1.100
COLORADO	1811 1.092
PITTSBURGH	1782 1.075
BOSTON 1768 1.066
NASHVILLE	1186 1.065
VANCOUVER	1759 1.061
MINNESOTA	1000 1.053
ST. LOUIS	1745 1.052
BUFFALO 1736 1.047
WASHINGTON	1710 1.031
TORONTO 1693 1.021
MONTRÉAL	1685 1.016
SAN JOSE	1675 1.010
NY RANGERS	1668 1.006
CHICAGO 1662 1.002
CALGARY 1645 0.992
ANAHEIM 1543 0.980
OTTAWA 1612 0.972
PHOENIX 1601 0.966
LOS ANGELES	1584 0.955
CAROLINA	1560 0.941
FLORIDA 1448 0.920
WINNIPEG	942 0.913
EDMONTON	1505 0.908
COLUMBUS	858 0.903
NY ISLANDERS	1435 0.866
TAMPA BAY	1424 0.859
tl;dr - Detroit is pretty good at hockey. Edmonton has been bad for 20 years. The Flames are in the middle tier.

I might save the whole thing as a Google Doc if anyone cares.

Please do! That would be a great resource to have.

I still get a little fuzzy on how sharing and ownership works on Google Docs / Drive, so let me know if this link doesn't work.

Tampa Bay with the worst overall point percentage the last 20 years, and yet they managed to win a Cup........and even worse it was against us.

Also, Carolina, Anaheim and L.A. all below us in point percentage but have a Cup in that time.......Chicago one spot above us, and have two Cups.

Finally, boy do Poile and Trotz ever do a fantastic job down in Nashville. Incredible really. Almost a shame that they couldn't have won the Cup when they had that strong team back in 06/07.

I thought it was interesting that in the bottom tier (21-30) teams of the last 20 years, there have still been three cup wins. Not as many as the middle tier (5) or top tier (12), but better than nothing.

Just get int the playoffs, and anything can happen!

This was the last 20 years right?

I added Cup wins in parenthesis on the side since the Rangers Cup win in 93/94.

All seasons completed since 92-93, so the Canadiens get credit for one as well.

Toronto doesn't seem as bad as I imagine they would have been. I was surprised to see that they have a higher PPG than us.

One area where the team has no cap is management. Why don't the Flames go get guys like Holland and Babcock? Offer them a stupid amount of money. That money will ensure that the. Flames get the most from the 68 (and counting) million dollar payroll.

Flames are never going to be better than a bottom ten team unless they hire the best managers.
