CALGARY, AB – The Calgary Flames announced today that they have recalled centre Markus Granlund from the Abbotsford Heat of the American Hockey League.
Granlund, originally a second round pick (45th overall) by Calgary in the 2011 NHL Draft, has scored 13 goals and added 11 assists for 24 points in 29 games with the Abbotsford Heat this season. This will be his first call-up to the NHL.

Exciting! I definitely never thought much of him as a prospect, but his season in Abbotsford has definitely given me some hope that he can be a player for us.
I really hope he doesn't look out of place

Backlund has been very good lately and plays a solid 200ft. game, but Granlund has the talent to be a full time NHL center man. It's just a matter of learning the defensive side and how to battle against bigger center men. We shall see…it's still his first year in N.A.
Looking forward to watching him tonight.
I'm a little surprised it wasn't Knight, but I think they're just going to clear Stajan's roster spot and have him up full time, not as a call-up fill-in player.

Granlund always looks to be open in a big ice surface. Let's see how he does in an NHL rink when he's gonna be covered more closely with bigger oppositions. There's no way he'll be that wide open 99% of the time.

So far he seems to be scoring more on the small surface than he did in Finland.
“We talked to (Backlund) and he feels he could be in and so does the medical staff,” said Flames head coach Bob Hartley. “There’s no sense putting him in this morning. You guys and I will find out at the same time. We called up Granlund in case Backs can’t go.”
Quote:
“I talk with Troy on a weekly basis,” Hartley said. “There are quite a few guys (performing) right now. We wanted a centreman in the event Backs can’t go. It might be just for tonight, it might be for a couple of games. We don’t know. Markus Granlund has been playing very well and he deserves it.”
Although Hartley wouldn’t reveal the nature of Backlund’s injury, he didn’t seem overly concerned.
“Hey, we appreciate what players want to do,” he said. “A minor injury like this, the medical staff might say it’s his own decision. We feel there’s no big dangers and we’re approaching the midway point of the season. How many players aren’t playing at 100 per cent right now? If it would be the case, we might be short of players basically every game.
“We’ll trust Back’s judgement but if he feels he’s not capable of helping us, there is nothing wrong (with sitting). Especially at centre, with the battle we’ve been having with all our young centres, I’m sure no one wants to give up their spot. That’s a credit to them. But at the same time, we have to make sure we do the right thing.”
Translation : Burke is working on a trade and the pieces could be coming together quickly, so Backlund might not be with us tonight and even if he is we don't want to risk injury

I think your translation skills are as good as the guy who did the sign language at Mandela's funeral.

Haha, I was joking, but let's admit its a little odd to be calling up a player when both he and the medical staff say they are good to go. And it's not like there hasn't been enough "Backlund trade smoke" for it not to have had some substance. Can't be that far fetched.
