How long until we see Berra?
So far goaltending has been pretty much terrible for Calgary. Both Ramo and MacDonald have made a few nice saves (Joey with a couple highlight reel) but both are sub .900 in terms if save %.
I think the Flames next plan is to get Berra up here to see what he has. I know he is still adjusting to North America but by all accounts he has been great in Abby.
This team works extremely hard and better goaltending would have them with 7 or 8 wins by now. I think they should try and cut bait with MacDonald as soon as possible and bring up Berra so Brossoit and Ortio can both play on the heat. Ride out Berra and Ramo all year and address the goaltending situation at the draft where the team should have an abundance of picks to play with (after offloading some pending ufa's at the deadline)

His save percentage is only .908 in abbots ford. I'd be surprised if he was much better.

Berra got pulled for Ortio tonight, so I don't see Berra being called up right now.

A while still, Berra has been up and down as well early this season, with some very good games, and a few real stinkers.
I feel management is going to be very patient here and until either Ramo or Berra show consistently good/bad efforts over more than 3 games in a row, we won't be seeing Berra up, or Ramo down.
I'm not sure when waivers kick in for Ramo, but if he's struggling when he reaches that mark, I can see them bringing Berra up at that point, but probably not until then.
Ortio on the other hand has looked great in Alaska, and was spectacular tonight from all accounts in relief for Berra as the Heat won a comeback win 5-4 in overtime.

I think very few goaltenders would put up good numbers on this team.

I don't think Berra is the answer at the present time as he's no more proven than the guys on the big team already. We all know what Joey Mac is and that's a solid backup. Ramo to me at least looks like backup material at best as there doesn't seem to be any consistency in his game. This team needs more of a proven starter and it's a lot to expect that Berra is going to come to the NHL and become a starter right away. That said I imagine he may get called up at some point this season.
Maybe the Flames have decided that they are just going to ride this season out with what they have and upgrade in the offseason I don't know. I can't imagine Burke is enamoured with the NHL goaltending tandem he's inherited so who knows but if Reimer ever goes on the block I would imagine that the Flames would be very interested as Burke seems to like his guys.

I think both goalies get a long look for the Flames. Unless Ramo consistently starts crapping the bed, I would assume the plan is to get Berra up halfway through the season and give him a look. I also think Ortio will get a few games as well.

The Flames won't likely won't attempt to get a legit starter until they exhaust the Berra option.

I'm going to go out on a limb and boldly predict he starts a game for the Flames before the end of the season.

Ramo let in one stinker at the end of the first. Unfortunately that goal dictated the game.
I still believe in Ramo

No way should the Flames be looking for a goaltending upgrade right now.
I'm not sold that Ramo isn't the guy going forward. As Hells Bells posted above:
Quote:
Ramo: "How long until I see an NHL calibre defence in front of me?".

Let's upgrade the defense first.
The quality of shots and added focus/pressure with a weaker defense means more strain on the goaltender, and in turn they will give up more goals/easier goals as they will be over worked.
A guy like Corey Crawford is in the running to be on the Canadian Olympic team this year, if he was on the Flames he wouldn't be given a thought. That's not a knock against Crawford, but that hockey is truly a team game. In order for an elite goalie to thrive they need a good team in front of them. In order for a goalie to step up and take their game to the next level they need help from their teammates.
Out defense isn't ready to take Ramo (Berra, whomever) to the next level, let's get them ready to help the goaltenders. If Ramo doesn't step up with them, then look elsewhere.
