I went to Urban Expressions (the NE one) after seeing some recommendations in another thread a couple of years ago. I have always had a good experience there.

How much is mounting? Just curious. I'm buying a new set of winters and just need some advice on if I should get basic steel wheels with them.

What about for large diameter, large width tires?
I recently got 345/30-19 rear tires mounted at Kal-tire on 42nd. It took them 2.5 hours, stabbed 2 holes through the driver's seat with a tool, and scraped the finish off the wheels like crazy.
I went to them with the understand that they had the modern machine for the very large tires, but they still did an awful job.
Will be getting 2 slightly smaller tires mounted soon, but still relatively large.

Is this something a guy could do on his own? I've seen the made in china equipment to do it at Princess Auto.

Totally worth it. Saves your summer wheels from the harsh winter, and if you're so inclined you can swap them whenever you want.

I second this. I'm a keyboard jockey by day, and not a "car guy" by any stretch. But at the first sign of snow, I head out to my garage and swap them over because they're on separate rims. Really easy, and it sure beats trying to get a tire shop to do it when everyone else in town also wants it done, having to leave your car there for the day and/or wait, etc.

Thanks for the recommendations! Called around to all the recommended ones as well as a few other shops, Urban X was cheapest at $20 a tire and they book appointments, none of this show up at 7 or 8am and hope for luck that your car gets in at some point. Have an 11am appointment on Monday to get the new rubber put on.

Yeah UrbanX is amazing. Usually you are in and out in half an hour. They are a small shop but always do amazing work!
Also I second everyone saying to have a separate set of rims, it is just so much easier than having to get them mounted every time.

Second rims are great, as long as you don't mind the TPMS light on all winter...

Yup, I'm in the same boat. I am by no means a car guy at all, but the convenience of switching my own tires beats needing to load the tires and take it to a shop every year. Grab a decent torque wrench and breaker bar from Can Tire when they have them on sale, and it really is a breeze to change.

There's an easy fix for that- your second set of rims have a second set of TPMS sensors in them.
I think with taxes and shipping/ duty I paid a total of $700 for a set of 4 18" aluminum rims for my SUV along with TPMS sensors. I think it was Tirerack that I got them from. Seeing as I plan on keeping the vehicle for at least 5 years (if not longer)- it was worth it.

Yes but some vehicles will only accept one set of TPMS sensors requiring the vehicle to be re-programmed by the dealer ($$$) every season.
