Default Car Advice

So i have a Jeep with a few bumps and bruises...Black value on it is between 7K to 10K....the bumps and bruises will cost about 3K...

I am currently looking for a new car - what should I do?

1. Spend the 3K to fix it and sell it privately?
2. Spend the 3K to fix it and trade it in?
3. Trade it in as is?
4. pay the deductible (450) and have insurance pay for the fixes

What are you experiences?

I'd go for #3 because it is the path of least resistance. Seems silly to sink $3k into a vehicle when you may not get it back.

You will probably lose $1000 on the trade in option overall but it is the least hassle. And one with the least uncertainty.

DEFINITELY not #2, dealers will never give you any of that $3k

I'd say SELL IT Privately, as is

YOu'll still get $8k for it as-is, and not have the risk of spending $3k to fix, and still only getting $8k

Trade would be okay too.... hassle free!

bottom line: don't spend any money on the car, you won't see any of it back.

Sell it privately as is. Although expect to get around 4-5k if low end is 7k, and there's 3k in damage.

No way would I make a claim through insurance if you're not keeping it. Or if you can afford to do the repairs out-of-pocket.

How bad is the damage? If there's body panels dragging on the ground, I'd fix it a bit before trying to sell, but not necessarily the full 3k to get it back to pristine.

Include the cost of your time selling it privately.

Both bumpers have been cracked
driver side mirror is ducked tape
both front signal light covers are cracked

most of the damage was thanks to a hit run which i have a police report and have claimed

my insurance lady says i should just get them to write me a cheque for the damage and trade it in as is...

I know that if I read the CarFax that stated the claim was paid out but vehicle was not repaired it would be a red flag to me, if you sell privately in that scenario. I have no idea how a dealership would factor that into their trade-in valuation.

Sounds like a hard vehicle to sell and I would dump it at the dealer. I would suggest that you negotiate the price on the new purchase PRIOR to mentioning the trade in or the dealer will just play with the purchase price to make your trade seem valuable.

I would suggest you won't get much of anything on your trade, regardless what the vehicle black books at.
