Anyone do or done this?

I like watersports, surfing, swimming, boating, fishing, etc. I'm also pretty active and was looking for something to do in the summer that involves water. Family is looking at getting a camper - but I wonder what I'll do when we go camping? Ideally I'd like something to motivate me to grab the trailer and go somewhere. Gong camping and sitting around snacking and drinking gets old and dull for me pretty fast. Where we camp isn't always the best for going for a run (bears, cougars, getting lost). I'm always amazed that people can do this for 3-5 days straight.

I also know a boat and surf/ski setup isn't in the budget now or likely ever and is a lot of money to spend for crappy Alberta summers. I like to surf when by the ocean so I suddenly wondered about windsurfing. I'd imagine you can get some good wind at Sylvan and Gull lakes, not sure about ghost and you're probably not allowed at Glenmore.

Anyway
Does anyone do this anymore? It almost feels very 1980's/90's.... Almost like rollerblading.

Has anyone done it in the past? Know people that do this?

Thanks!

I believe this is the latest water/board trend:

just tried paddleboarding on a lake last week, lots of fun, pretty cool, but I can see it getting boring relatively quickly on a lake. if you like paddling around calm water, it's not bad, but windsurf probably gives you a better workout and more challenge when you're stuck inland away from an ocean.

Yeah, gets boring quite fast. Ocean SUP'ing is better but still, if you're on the ocean might as well just be surfing (waves provided). Leave the SUP to the kids and wife.

Windsurfing is a lot of fun, but kind of a dying sport, trend seems to be toward kite surfing now.

Kite is a lot easier to haul around than a mast as well, if you are camping.

Windsurfing is about 10x more entertaining than paddleboarding. Still see quite a few dudes windsurfing on the ocean these days, so I don't think of it as an 80's thing. Haven't tried kiteboarding yet, but it looks awesome but maybe more difficult.

When I tried windsurfing I rented a pretty sweet board and sail from UofC. Not sure how much it would cost you nowadays, but it certainly wasn't much money and enjoyable on the lakes.

Then I tried the ocean near Tofino.. got my @#$ handed to me Still, great fun and even better exercise. Don't forget a wetsuit if you're headed to the west coast
