For 900k that isn't a bad deal at all.

Most importantly, hopefully he can help the Panthers stay out of the basement of the NHL standings.

To what end? Is he going to help this team be better in the long run?
The Flames arent looking for immediate help, they're going to suck pretty hard for the next couple seasons, then veteran help might be looked at.

By the Oilers? The Flames will win the Stanley Cup.

I'd rather give Corban Knight the playing time.

Don't they have like seven centers now?
Barkov, Bjugstad, Shore, Matthias, Fleishman, Goc and now Gomez?

He's a good, veteran guy to have around. The Flames will have a lot of young players that could learn a lot about how to be a professional hockey player from him.
He's also not a slouch in the faceoff circle, something that the Flames desperately need. I feel he's a better defensive center than Stajan or anyone else on the Flames roster.
Gomez won't turn any NHL team into a winner at this stage in his career, but he could help a team win a few more games.
Just my $0.02...

I honestly do not think Gomez is an example of what I would want any of the Flames prospects to develop into. The guy goes out, earns a huge contract and then pretty much mails in the rest of his career to the point that he has to have the NHLPA beg for a special rule to allow him to be bought out early so that he isn't sent home to wait for his buyout.
At this point in the rebuild I would rather have Stajan as an example to the kids because at least he has shown some ability to bounce back and at least partially redeem himself for some really bad seasons.
The main punchline though is that the Flames have no need for additional veterans. If anything we should be shipping out one or two more vets to make some room for the (hopefully) successful camp that some of our rookies are going to have.
If the main thing that Gomez brings to the table is good faceoffs and some defensive responsibility then I would just give his spot to Knight and Monahan as I feel confident that either rookie will do the job just as well.
