What would you give up for Seguin?
The rumours are persistent that the Flames are actively trying to acquire Tyler Seguin, my question is what would you be willing to offer?
The good:
he is still only 21 years old, which is the same age as Sven Baertschi
He is locked up for The next six years with a cap hit of 5.75m
He has 121 points in 203 games over 3 seasons, playing out of position, and buried on the 4th line his first season, once playing along side Bergeron and Marchand he has 99 points in 129 games.
He was drafted 2nd overall and has insane speed and passing ability, with his size 6'1 190 he could be the big #1 center the Flames have dreamed of
Has ample playoff experience, (two Stanley cup finals in three seasons)
The bad:
There are questions about his work ethic and maturity (however he is still 21, so what kid at that age isn't immature?
He regressed after his big sophomore season from 67 points in 81 games to 32 points in 48 games
He struggled in the playoffs to score, and was moved off his line to the third/4th line for the last two rounds of the playoffs (however he set up the game winner in game 2 of the scf and had an incredibly unlucky 1.4% shooting percentage. ( meaning he scored 1 goal on about 70 shots, his career playoff average before this year was around 10% and his regular season average career is also around 10% he should have had around 7 goals)
Decision: after weighing these factors quite quickly I see very little downside to this kid, the only concern I have is that he may have lost some motivation to play with a Stanley cup ring, and a big contract under his belt. I do think however he has plenty more to give, by playing in a hockey market, and being rivals to Taylor Hall playing in Edmonton, it could bring new life in the Taylor/Tyler debate, and athletes at that level have plenty of ego/pride.
To get a 21 year old who has already proven he can not only play in the NHL but has shown it at an elite level, knows the grind of the playoffs, and fills the hardest position in the NHL to fill an elite 1st line center, I would definitely move heaven and earth to get this guy. Now what would I give?
I assume that Boston has interest in Glencross tough guy, really good price tag, and can score goals, I assume the hardest part would be to get him to waive his no trade clause. He might be able to step in for Horton at half the price.
Now they need someone to fill Seguins spot on rw on the second line, that could be Cammalerri (with the flames eating half of his hit so 3m) thus saving the Bruins another 2.75m from what Seguin was making.
Now for the tricky part, they are going to want some youth. If it is true they want gaudreau, I am all for it. If they want baertschi, I would also have to say good bye to him. But would I trade all 4 for Seguin? I don't know. Maybe the bruins would be interested in backlund instead? A younger, cheaper way more skilled version of Chris Kelly?
Here is what I would propose to them. (assuming glencross would accept the trade.)
1) glencross+cammy (eating half his deal) gaudreau+ 2nd and 4th round picks in 2014.
2) glencross+backlund+gaudreau+ second rounder
3) glencross+gaudreau+ baertschi
Those would probably be my 3 offers. Let me know what your thoughts would be? Do you want him? What would you give? Am I giving too little? Too much?
Remember Seguin has 6 years of control, and is the same age as Baertschi.

Seguin isn't going anywhere.
Edit: Well I'll be damned...

I don't think it'll take as much to get Seguin as many on CP think it will. I'd say the 2014 1st rounder + Gaudreau with minor tweaks could likely get it done.

1) glencross+cammy (eating half his deal) gaudreau+ 2nd and 4th round picks in 2014. No, way too much for one player
2) glencross+backlund+gaudreau+ second rounder No, way too much for one player
3) glencross+gaudreau+ baertschi Glencross + one of these, but not both prospects

You're equating Cammalleri + 2nd to Baertschi's value?
1st proposal, super easy yes.
2nd proposal, easy yes.
3rd proposal, would consider it and probably the closest to a real chance of happening but would be about the upper limit I would be happy with.

Because the Bruins want to lose salary and not add, your looking at a high draft pick and a very good prospect.
You'd have to be willing to surrender a Bart or JG as well as a first and probably add another pick.
As much as I would love to see Sequin here, I think it would be costly in terms of our rebuild to give up a bunch of young assets.

I really hope those rumours go away soon. Seguin has a lot of potential, but seeing CPers throw around Sven and Johnny Hockey in trade suggestions almost makes me throw up. Let's develop our young assets for once, shall we?

Glencross + Gaudreau + 2014 3rd round pick would be about as high as I'd be willing to go.

Seguin would not survive in a hockey mad city like Calgary. I don't think he has the temperance to handle it.
If anything, I think it will kill the Taylor/Tyler debate (which, IMO, is already kinda sorta dead).

Seguin's a great player, but after seeing Gaudreau in the WJC last year, I'd want to avoid dealing him.
This is not to say that Gaudreau is anywhere near equivalent in value, just that I don't want to deal a potential steal we got in the 4th round.
The only players I'd be comfortable giving up are vets like Giordano, Glencross, Cammalleri and others... and there's no way Boston does that.

That's a ridiculous reason to pursue a player, never mind the fact that it's just half-assed conjecture on your part that makes no logical sense.

I would be worried about moving the 2014 1st rounder... That could be a top 5 pick, would rather move from our actual cupboard.

No firsts, no Baertschi, Brodie or Monahan.
Likely not enough, but giving up those items is cost prohibitive.

The 2014 1st round pick is grounded and will remain in its room until the draft.

Honestly, I would not bother. We are not in a position where we can shed the amount of assets necessary to get him. It would likely take Glencross + Sven + Gaudreau + 1st next year to get him. If you think that's nuts, would you take any of the deals listed in the original post for a 21 year old potential #1 center.
We will get our Seguin type player next year or the year after. On paper, we have the worst team in the entire league top to bottom, so it's unlikely that we'll finish outside of the top 3, and we'll likely get Reinhart, Ekblad or Ho Sang, and possibly a guy like McDavid the year following.
We need to get about 15 players in the same conversation as Sven and TJ Brodie before we can really talk about moving a couple of them for a star player (Seguin). We currently only have Monahan, Sven, Gaudreau, Janko, Brodie, Poirier, and Klimchuk. In a couple seasons, we might have enough, but now we unfortunately do not.
