The word icon gets used a lot when describing guys who excelled in their field.
Pat Summerall was truly one however.
He was Jim Nantz before Jim nantz.
I think someone said he called 16 Superbowls and of course many pf those with John madden. Also the voice of the Masters for years and years as well as the US Open tennis championships.
Legendary.

the off topic forum has been like the Obituary page of late
for me, he is to NFL football, what Ed Whalen was to Flames hockey. The game sounds different without them

With the baby boomers nearing the end of their lives, we will be seeing many more. The end of a great generation.

Pat Summerall just wasn't for me. Found his call boring for my taste. I get why others would love his work, but I never got into it. Sports is about emotion, and he never showed any. Having said that, if given the option between Pat and a guy who does nothing but yell and scream, I'll take Pat.
I just like guys who know when to ramp up the emotion and I never got that from Pat. On Viatieri's game winning field goal or Terrell Owen's "catch", it felt no different than a play in the second quarter of a mean nothing game.
Respect the guy 100 percent, but his style wasn't for me.

I think this sums up why I liked Summerall and have a general dislike for guys like Joe Buck and Jim Hughson:
Quote:
If remembering Pat Summerall is going to inspire a complaint, though, it’s this: the guys at the very top of the field are thigh-deep in the one thing you’d never hear in a Pat Summerall broadcast: self-importance.
I’m not saying Jim Nantz and Al Michaels don’t have their laudable qualities, but they both absolutely believe they’re a part of the reason you’re watching. Al Michaels can’t resist his own opinion, and (man, I bet he’d really hate this criticism) often sounds just like the drunkard at the end of the bar screaming, “THAT’S TERRIBLE CLOCK MANAGEMENT!” He is also very aware that he is a celebrity and that he is important.
Jim Nantz has lost his lifelong battle with smugness. In a rout. He is the living embodiment of the Masters theme song. He tries to seem like your pal with his “Hello, friends” bit, but off camera, I can’t picture him saying “Hello, friends” to anyone who doesn’t have a white sweater tied around his neck.
This isn’t a commentator bitchfest, though. I offer those examples only to illustrate what we’ve been missing since Pat Summerall left the booth.

Sad to hear, but for me the guy was the epitome of the boring 90s superbowls that put you to sleep as soon as the game started. Hope he's a little more exciting in the after life.

The guy was simply the voice of football. None like him since, and likely none to ever come.
