Default Earth Hour 2013

No thread prior to it happening (8:30-9:30 tonight). Did anyone care?

Nope. I actually turned on all my lights just to spite the hippies. LOL!

Nope didn't care. I went about my business as usual. I don't need a bunch of hippies telling me when I should or shouldn't turn off my lights. I conserve energy and recycle on my own accord.

Didn't know it was today. Don't care anyway. In fact, we had some friends over. Their four kids and our three kids were all over the house. As a result, I'm pretty sure all of our lights were on for a while.

Waste of time in all seriousness. To what end does this serve? Not like all the skyscrapers and businesses do it. Not effective unless absolutely everything gets turned off. Pretty it would only take a handful of people to shut it all down anyways.

I'm pretty environmentally conscious and I practice what I preach, but I've said it before and I'll say it again, I've never understood this one.

Perhaps it's good for raising awareness. Maybe slowly through events like this, more and more people will practice better habits the whole year and think about their footprint. But I find there's two type of people and neither of them matter to this event anyway. Those that do practice good habits all year round, and really don't need to do this, and those that don't give a crap and wouldn't anyway.

Oh, and of course a third that says they do, but really don't.

Hopefully events like this will get more people on board, but I seriously doubt it.

Oi. It's the same thread each and every year. All the naysayers who don't understand the point. So I'm just not going to bother rehashing everything I've posted in years past and just post the links:

I needed a thread to alert me to do the same. I'm kind of glad there was no thread.

Another year, another Earth Hour, another indiscernible fluctuation in Calgary’s energy consumption.

Part of the minimal impact could be attributed to the fact that only 30 per cent of Calgary’s energy demands come from residential customers, while 70 per cent is used by commercial and industrial customers, according to Enmax.

That is why this is so damn useless.

People turning off their lights for one hour makes no difference at all. Its not going to change any one's habits.

I drive my car less than I used to since I live eight blocks from my office. I usually keep the lights off in my place during the day anyways since I get so much natural light in here. I turn off my lights before I leave my place when I'm going out. These are every day things I do, not some hollow gesture (in fact 'saving the Earth' doesn't even factor into it), making Earth Hour virtually pointless as it pertains to me, and I don't care to sit in my living room in the dark for an hour on a Saturday evening. I completely forgot, to be honest. Not that I would have sat in the dark anyway. I am pretty energy conscious as it is, so I have no guilt in letting this pass me by without remembering. I understand that awareness aspect of it, and I find the "I'm gonna turn on all of my lights and run my truck 24/7 out of spite" redneck attitudes quite sad, but the reality is that an individual turning off their lights for an hour is pretty much meaningless.

"Wow - I saved 0.0000000x kilojoules of power. Yet I live 30km away from where I work and commute there in a F-350 that has never hauled anything more than a briefcase. High fives! We saved Earth!"
