Doing it like Ditka: Would you be in favour of an epic deal for Nathan MacKinnon?
Maybe we can get a poll?
So here's the deal: Would you be in favour of the Flames trading their 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th round picks, along with Pittsburgh's 1st, to the Colorado Avalanche for the 1st Overall pick, and selecting Nathan MacKinnon.
The fact is: The Flames have not had a true #1C for nearly 20 years. All reports seem to suggest MacKinnon is a franchise #1C years.
Is it worth trading the chance of achieving at best 3-5 secondary players in order to get that 1C piece?
(For those who do not follow the NFL the thread title is a reference to the famous trade for Ricky Williams: )

the trade was a blockbuster.

Edit: thanks to the posters who actually noticed I didn't include the St. Louis pick.

Of course you do it for Sid(assuming we are talking his draft year). After the 1st rounders, the rest are most likely junk.

Avs are going to pick Jones. Our 6th overall pick and another nice piece like pittsburgh's 1st for 2nd or 3rd overall? Take it and run. Sucks we won all those meanngless games when you see the cost we paid today.
Any higher cost, grab Lindholm, he's going to be a great player.

i think there might be some merit in trading in a year's worth of draft picks to get into the top 5.
The NHL draft is such a crapshoot after the first 15 or so picks, why not just take out the chance aspect of it.
Not sure it's a move i'd like the flames to make just yet, as they need to basically start fresh, but for teams that have a good stable of depth in their system, i think it would be worthwhile to get extremely high quality in exchange for quantity.

If it was a generational player I'd be ok with it. Though of course, no team would probably agree to that trade then.
I'm not sure MacKinnon or Jones is worth it. Not saying they wouldn't be good, but they'd be like the Oilers first rounders. One of those is not going to make a huge difference on their own.
The only player recently that I think I may have been tempted on, that also may have made sense in a trade like this would be Tavaras. Not quite a Crosby/Ovechkin, whom the other team wouldn't have given up for all the picks in the world anyway, but a very good player that would make a huge difference on a good team.

Jones is the new Pronger, but will bolt for NY or LA first chance with JayZ as agent. Needs the big city payday.

For MacKinnon? Maybe if we are talking a Crosby type player (in his draft year, before all the injuries) but for MacKinnon... not a chance.
The last player picked in a draft I would have traded an entire year's worth of picks for was Tavares.

I agree. Any one of the 1st rounders, even all 3, might be franchise players.

I'd be hesitant to move all three 1sts for the 2nd overall pick.
Like I said in another thread I think I'd move two of the first rounders and a 3rd/4th rounder for the #2 overall pick. Not sure that'd be enough to get it done but I don't think we can afford to give up more.

I would do this trade if I were the Flames but not if I were the Avs
I'm actually surprised that most Flames fans wouldn't do this
Plus, it looks like we still have the Blues' first rounder

There's examples of franchise players coming way later in the draft (Datsyuk) albeit very rarely. However "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take". If we were in a position where we weren't getting a quality player (lindholm/monahan) I'd say go for it, but we can't build a team on just one guy. Now is the time for management to decide on a culture to build around and to start drafting BPA to support that.
