Default donate used books

Is there some place in Calgary where I can donate used books? Will they pick the books up?

Call the library, and they'll tell you to throw them in your blue bin. No kidding.

You can also just take them into the library if there aren't that many and you think they're in decent shape. At least, you can do that here in Ontario.

Take them to a used book store. There's one on 4th Street SW at 20th or so (next to Ducky's Karaoke Bar).

I believe thrift stores sell books as well, so that's always an option too.

There's a couple annual book drives that happen over the summer, with dropoff points at fire halls.

Used bookstores are usually pretty picky about what they take. Last time we took in a couple bankers boxes of books, and Fair's Fair wanted maybe 3 books out of the entire batch.

Bookstores are no longer good drop points because they need to turn a profit in a shrinking market. Libraries are tough because they have space constraints.

Places like the YMCA, women's shelters, homeless shelters and churches are now 'good' places for a mass drop of books.

Hospitals, long term care homes.

CBC collects books for a sale once a year, and probably some community groups as well. I know that Briar Hill school has a book sale every year.

Places like Goodwill and Salvation Army will take books, and I suspect Value Village as well. Homeless shelter is probably a good option, and maybe churches for rummage sales might accept them.

Here is a link for places in Calgary that accept book donations. Also suggestions like BookMooch and freecycle. I will also add Book Crossings - do a search for them, and leave the books around town.

Or give them as gifts this Christmas. Save money, and make space. Double whammy.

Depending on where you live in the city, if you put them out with a Free sign the will disappear. I did this all the time when we live in Mac. Towne.

Maybe Calgary should have a kick it to the curb day.
