I never liked him. But he was elected a lot, so I guess that's a minority opinion. I was a student, and I watched my tuition climb 30% every year, which made it tougher than it needed to be IMO.
In any case it seems like these are given out to pretty much everybody, so it probably shouldn't be taken as much more than a nice gesture to a guy who appears to be dying.

Keynesian economics and government subsidies led to that climb, not Ralph's policies.
He did fine in his political career. I would take someone like him every time over most "standard" politicians.

What took so long? Has any other Premier ever eliminated the debt?

There can be 64 Officer of the Order of Canada awards each year. As per wikipedia, there were 1,012 living members as of July 2009. I wouldn't say 0.003% of Canada's population is "pretty much everybody".
I appreciated Ralph for balancing the Alberta budget and making the province debt free. I didn't mind the tuition hikes, as I knew it was a short term sacrifice that I would benefit from once I graduated. 30% per year does seem excessive. What field were you in? When I started my first year cost around $3,000. My last (fourth) year was about $4,000. If they were equal percentage increases, this is only 10% per year. If it was 30% per year, my last year would have been $6,600, not $4,000.
I worked during my undergrad years, so I graduated without tuition. I often saw people who complained about student loans and tuition, but I also saw them in the bars I worked in several nights a week, since they didn't work during the semesters. I'm not saying you were one of them; I'm saying they form a part of the population.

Congrats Ralph!
We can only hope that we'll have another Premier who speaks the truth and follows through on his/her promises whether or not they are politically advantageous.

Congrats Ralph. Well deserved. Best Premier that Canada has seen in the last 20 years. Too bad they didn't award this to you while you still could appreciate it.
I mark this as a "fail" on the part of the Order of Canada awards committee.

Grats Ralph.
You can like or hate Ralph's policies as much as you want (I do a bit of both), but to deny that he was a unique politician in that he did what he said, is just screwed up.
Same reason I like Nenshi, and think he will be our Mayor for a long time. It certainly isn't because I like all his polices.

Why don't you go down to the nursing home and see if he's all drunk and stuff. Might want to help him drink his booze though, his dementia is slowing him down a bit.

I thought he was a great Mayor. I can't really comment on how he was as a Premier. One thing is for sure though, I'd love to have a beer with him in his prime. He has bags of personality and an understanding for the common guy and just seems like a fun guy to be with.
Oh, and am I the only one old enough to remember, "Ralph Klein, CFCN News."?
