Air Canada Wildcat Baggage Handlers Strike
Baggage handlers in Montreal and Toronto go on a wildcat strike today, cancelling dozens of flights in and out of Montreal and Toronto. The effects are rippling across the rest of the country. Big labour solidarity as Montreal joins the Toronto strike. Illegal strike.
Does anyone else appreciate the irony that among those passengers who will be affected are those who are flying into Toronto for the NDP convention this weekend?

If baggage handlers want salary increases, maybe they shouldn't be baggage handlers.

If they have any trouble in Calgary I'll volunteer to huck bags for a day, just so I could be on the ramp with all those planes. Avgeek!

Simple solution: Just let Air Canada fail.
Someone else will pick up the slack, without all of the legacy contracts and, ahem... baggage... AC is saddled with.

I don't think Baggage Handler salaries are what are sinking this company when they pay them about the same as the average Superstore Cashier makes.

perhaps, but wildcat strikes over non-salary issues are not part of the solution.

I Was working as a baggage handler in Vancouver for 10.75 an hour the Compaby did west jet Cathay pacific The guys for Aircanada made mid twentys to start and used to leave bags on the runway all the time.

Not a great week for Air Canada.
First the Pilots basically do a sick in, then their maintainance contractor shuts down throwing thousands out of work, then a stupid illegal strike action.
Air Canada bleeds money, they hae terrible management a unrealistic union and they're getting their poop pushed in by other airlines.
Their service is terrible.
There's no reason to keep that dinosaur afloat.
Once today's strike (Which the strikers have mentioned is going to last 72 hours) is declared illegal start pink slipping 100 workers an hour til they go back to work, and start looking for a buyer, or a buyer for the assets.
At the same time start firing members of the senior management team.

in all seriousness good for them. just because an anti union conservative government keeps interfering with rights that our great great grandfathers had their heads split over doesn't mean they suddenly dont exit.

It's surprising to me that they didn't mention anything about a strike at the Calgary airport...and when we get off the plane at Toronto, it was chaos.

Word is that Lisa Raitt was in the terminal and a few guys sarcastically clapped for her. Air Canada suspended them which prompted the strike, so not a salary issue, although there are for sure a lot of issues.
My company does work at Pearson that this could have affected but so far hasn't, but between this and the protests down at the island airport for opening the new tunnel, not a good day to have a flight into or out of Toronto.
