What magazines do you read?

I personally don't really have too much time to read books these days, so I find that magazines tend to tide me over much better, and I try to get my hands on as many as possible.

I've been reading a men's magazine called Toro lately... it's a fairly laid-back Canadian men's magazine (not unlike Maxim, but way less skin and a little more cerebral).

I tend to read a lot of design magazines as well (considering I work at one), like Metropolis, I.D, Idea, Eye.

I used to read a lot of car mags like Motor Trend, but don't as much these days for some reasons.

National Geographic - I have a wall of them from 1963 through to 2005.

Canadian Geographic - somehow, I ended up with a subscription.

I get SI

And the blond also subscribes to Playboy for me every year. What a gal. O still think the uqality of articles in this thing has declined greatly from a decade or so ago, but it still has some other interesting features.

People.....there's a subscriber in my household and for some reason I can't wait to read all about Nick and Jessica every month. Add that to the weekly paparazzi photos of celebs without makeup and giddyup!!! Great toilet reading!

That's actually very close to my list, although I don't read Popular Mechanics much. But I love the New Yorker, and Walrus is decent, although I think their design borrows a little too heavily from the New Yorker.


I also like McSweeneys and Believer. Believer is my favorite magazine lately, but it comes out too regularly. I end up buying only every second or third issue. I'll occasionally pick up other lit. journals like Paris Review or Malahat.

We've got a huge number of design magazines lying around, as my girlfriend subscribes to a bunch of them. 'Step' is her favorite. You said you work at a Design magazine, Table 5? Which one?

Way, way, way, way back, my grandfather's place on the edge of town didn't have indoor plumbing . . . . no flush toilet, no running water, etc.

Even worse, what passed for toilet paper was . . . . . stacks of Readers Digest.

So thanks to all you Readers Digest subscribers for bringing back that rather scratchy memory.

Well, recently was getting the economist online, since I'm abroad. debating signing up again, but unfortunetly I'm going to back back in Canada in three months, and you can't transfer from an electronic subscription to a physical one. I much prefer having a dead tree in my hands.

Also read wired every month on their page.
I do however read a lot of newspapers and blogs as well though..

yeah, the Believer is a great mag as well, I especially love the overall look of that thing. The reason its so on and off is because its completely done by these two guys from their studio, and not some fancy publishing house. It's expensive to run a magazine, and who knows how long they can hold out for!

And yes, Im the Associate Art Director at I.D magazine. Is your gf a designer too?

Yeah, she's a self-employed graphic designer, and she happens to be a big fan of your magazine. I actually found it lying around on the weekend and ended up reading the article on Mizrahi. She designs a magazine herself; one called Beyond Magazine. It's a small, ads-free/subscription-based publication that should be coming out four times a year once they get up to speed. I'll point you to the website for her company and her gallery/studio/bookstore in downtown Calgary, incase you're curious (or if you want to do a feature on her in I.D! then she can never bug me about spending too much time on calgarypuck again!):

Well I don't subscribe to any at the moment, seems a little silly to me when I could read them at Chapters or the Library. In the past I've had subscriptions to scouting publications and computer sound engineering mags.

But the ones that interest me include a lot of the aforementioned ones like...

Don't read any of them as much as I'd like, but I'm currently on a kick to read more so we'll see how that goes. It's more of a list of what would I read if I read more magazines Into science stuff, political stuff, current events, etc.

Interesting thread so far, lot's of good ideas.
