Default Man made lakes

Just for curiosity sake, how did they fill up the lake in Auburn Bay? It's not like its close to any bodies of water.

Just guessing, but maybe a former quarry filled with groundwater?

Pretty much any new man made lake these days isn't just a lake, it's a storm water pond as well. They would just fill it from the storm drains draining into the lake.

Lake Bonavista was originally filled by diverting Fish Creek. Now it's topped up with city water. Some incredible amount of water evaporates from a lake on a warm summer's day. I imagine they all need city water or they'd just be mud pits in no time.

This.

Rain water and melting snow enters catch basins on the street and is carried to the 'lake'. An impermiable liner is installed in the lake to ensure it stays full.

The City requires developers to retain storm water onsite, thus a City requirement becomes a selling feature to lure suckers to their lakeside community!

Yeah, Bonaventure as well. I remember seeing a city plan (think it was from the city) from the 50's or 60's where it was proposed to a dam somewhere around where Deer Run/Parkland is now and flood the whole valley from the bow and make a huge lake stretching all the way to where Heritage Point golf course is now. Something like 1-3 miles wide in places and about 15 miles long. Would have been amazing to have a lake that big.

I actually worked for Carma while Auburn Bay was getting filled took a solid week and the water was pumped in from fish creek i believe. side note Auburn bay is completely lined with thick rubber, should be free of weeds for a while.

When we moved out to Calgary in 2004 I couldn't believe that there was such a thing as a man made lake and communities that had man made sliding hills. It just seems so wrong and that almost all turns are 90 degrees.
