Hey everyone,
So I lost my phone on Saturday and I'm wondering if there is a way to locate it, even though I didnt have the Find My iPhone app?

Short answer is no.
Out of curiosity, why would you not have Find my iPhone set up?

Unless you have some contacts within the NSA or Illuminati you are out of luck.

Did you have it set up with iCloud? If you did, try logging in with your itunes account on icloud.com
I cant remember if iCloud automatically had Find my Phone active or not.

Everybody without Find My Phone activated should probably go do that right now. If you've updated your phone it's as simple as signing into the cloud and toggling the switch to on. You're carrying a computer worth several hundred dollars around in your pocket and this is basically free insurance.

If your phone is still on and your GPS is activated, use one of your friend's iphones or ipads and use the "Find My Friends" app to locate your phone.

He would have had to download the app and accept a friend request from somebody. I'm hoping he did!

I think I tried to install this on my 3gs but it would not install because you need at least a 4, is that correct?

Update to iOS 5 and it'll have iCloud. Works on my 3GS.

What do I need to do or have done in order to make this happen?
If I needed the app I'm SOL. And yes I know I'm a big moron for not having that app.

Can't you just go to me.com and enter in your appleid to find your phone that way?

Don't worry man I've been in this situation before a couple times and it has restored my faith in humanity.
Just call a couple times from a buddies number or something and send a text message saying "if found please call xxxxxx"
Wait a week or two and you will be surprised that it will turn up!

Do you use Gmail and have your phone set to automatically check periodically? if you do it's easy to get your phone's current IP address which will at least be a start.
You'll likely need cooperation from the police to track it down based on that though.

The other option is to borrow an iPad or a iPhone4. Set it up with your account first on the iPad, then set it up on the 3GS. Remove it from the iPad, and your 3GS will still work on its own.
iOS 5 sounds great, but I think back to how much iOS4 slowed down 3G iPhones, and I am apprehensive about upgrading.

I was worried about that as well for my 3rd gen ipod, but i took the plunge and it doesn't seem any worse for wear for me.

As an update for those that care, bomba's advice turned out to be the winner. Called my phone, guy picked up and we met up. It may seem odd that I didnt try this before, but it was 3 am when I realized my phone was missing and I tried that so I guess I figured that was good enough haha. Thanks for the help everyone, and I will definitely be downloading findmyiphone now.

In my photos, the first picture I have on my camera roll, is a screen shot of my note pad with my alternate contact info, if the phone is ever lost. What is the first thing you do when you find a phone? Check for dirty pronz on someones camera right?
Anyway, before the find my phone thing, I left my 3gs at Talisman centre, and the next day I had a voice mail on my inbox at work letting me know they have my phone.....and commending me on my massive unit.
One part of that last statement is not true.
