Web hosting - Servers and such.

Hello!

I'm redoing my website, t blows and yes I am aware of that, for my video editing service, link below. I require an unlimited hosting service for my videos and they need to be fast enough for the file size. (I don't want to use youtube).

What are some of the best rates and quick hosting companies out there?

I'm going to target file size to 10-15 MB and 720 frame size.

Maybe it's not hosting I'm looking for but a server? I'm using 1&1 right now for the domain.

There's no such thing as unlimited hosting. Anything that's advertised as unlimited is either a) oversold so it'll be crappy or will become crappy eventually b) unlimited but only for trivial/personal use, and limited by the ToS or c) is unlimited but reserve the right to kick you off if your usage disrupts anyone else, which it will if you see any non-trivial usage.

The question is is how much bandwidth to you currently use for videos? If you don't actually use very much you could probably get away with using an advertised unlimited hosting plan; if it's not much actually used they may not notice you.

If you do get heavy usage for the videos, then it's best to go with something a little more $$ but that actually can deliver what they say and won't remove you if you use a lot.

Just out of curiosity, why not use Youtube to serve the video? It's free and comes packed with loads of brand promotion built right into it.

Vimeo is an alternative if you want something more professional (you can get a customized player if you pay for it).

Alternatively, you may want to checkout a Content Delivery Network (CDN). I had a client who broadcast video using Limelight (http://www.limelight.com/) and it worked pretty well for them. Proved much cheaper then trying to feed that bandwidth through a traditional web host.

Youtube does not advertise you. You help to advertise youtube. Video is a great way to get noticed and if you use youtube you won't get noticed but youtube will. Also youtube looks unprofessional. I like Vimeo's player but they are strictly for Art, and you can't put ad stuff or corporate stuff up on their site. (that's what their website says) Not that I am corporate... lol

lol I went to vimeo to make sure I'm right and found the new vimeo pro option for businesses. SWEET!

Sorry, If I'm late to the party, but if you plan to host a tone of videos for businesses purposes I'd suggest plopping them up on either Vimeo's new business portal or looking at Viddler. (I haven't tried Vimeo's new business stuff, but by far they are my favourite and recommended video company out there). Hosting your videos with one of these two web sites will be far less of a headache as you won't have to worry about updating and maintaining what ever video playback software you set-up and you can just focus on your site redesign, etc.,

Media Temple is also another really good option. Search around and you'll probably find one that matches your needs.

My only advice is stay the hell away from GoDaddy and don't use shaw or telus' web hosting services.

I just left a company (to go back to school) that does all the web hosting locally for companies like Demong Eyecentre and smaller to medium businesses. They could do webhosting for you perhaps. We have our own servers. PM if interested.
