Default Info about Immigration of a sick family member.

My wifes Grandmother that is 70 and single that lives overseas has been diagnosed with Cancer, she will need very aggressive treatment and there isn't any other family there to help her through this hard time. I was wondering if anyone knows of or knows where I could find some information about the possibilities of getting here to live with her daughter (my mother in-law) so we can get her treatment and are able to help her here since it is almost impossible to take 6 months off to go to Hungary and stay with her.

Any help would be great.

I honestly think you're going to be in tough, depending on the type of cancer and the stage that its in

See CIC processing manual OP02, Section 5.19:

"5.19. Medical requirements

Members of the family class are medically inadmissible if they or their family members are likely to
be a danger to public health or to public safety or if their admission might reasonably be expected
to cause excessive demands on health or social services [A38(1)]."

The only exceptions are for spouses and children. I would also think that her age combined with her illness aren't going to help her at all.

The first thing that the government is going to want as part of the process is an assesment of her condition from her current practicioner

That was kind of what I expected to find, but its just s**ty that a 70 year old woman has to go through treatment in a country where you have to tip your doctors and nurses cash just to get basic medical care in the hospitals.

I can't add much to your question but I'm shocked she would go through treatment. I had someone close to us who was 73 and they told him to just live as much as he can now and not put himself through the pain of treatment with only a 7% of living more than 5 years with treatment. He ended up dying at about the 4 year mark. But then again I guess it would depend on the cancer. Best of luck to her and I hope she can recover!

Hey I'm not the end all and be all of immigration processes, your best bet is to talk to CI, and maybe your MP.

But her age and condition don't make her a good candidate

Are you hoping to get her into Canada and then the family will cover the cost of the cancer treatment or are you hoping to get her into Canada and have the government cover the treatment?

If its the latter, I don't think you will have much success unless you cheat the system which I hope you are not intending to do. I do know of extended family / friends of the family who have done such things however. The fact that Alberta health cards don't have photos on record is a starting point... so once you're in the country.... That would be illegal however.

As far as I am aware if you bring her over you have to cover the costs of her medical care, she will not be eligable for the MSP or anything else for that matter.

Provided you are ok with that and can show proof you can cover it (which could be hundred of thousands realistically) I think it is actually quite simple.

I looked into this with a mind to bringing my mum out a few years ago, she was having none of it though, 'I've lived here all my life and I'll die here thank you very much!'

Especially if you live in the SE- where Jason Kenney is both our MP and immigration minister.

A question you may need to ask yourself- what if they allowed her to move here with the condistion that the gov't pays for none of her medical care? Would you be able to afford that?

I ask because I cannot see any other reason for them to allow it. Our health care system is already pretty fragile. If they allowed people to move here in their 70s for medical care- the system would go broke. How many of us don't have a friend or family member in another country with poorer health care? How many of us would want our own parents' care to suffer because of longer wait times; all due to more people using the system?

I would think that aggressive cancer treatment would by high 5 figures at least.

Thats a tough thing for anyone to afford.
