Default Caps - Jackets Blockbuster ....

The Capitals and BlueJackets made another move this offseason.. (that is 4 now).

It is a doozy....

To Washington:

Paul Stastny
Ludvig Rensfeldt
2 Million Buckaroos

To Columbus:

Brayden Schenn
Tim Gleason
Dylan Olsen

The Capitals want to compete now. The ability to add a 71 OV rated Centerman (who has been a PPG guy) to our roster without giving up a forward is great. It boosts the depth top to bottom. In regards to Gleason, Defense is a position of strength for us and it seems like there are a lot of defensman on the market currently.

Olsen and Rensfeldt are both good prospects, with Olsen having the edge in NHL upside.

Flame away Schenn lovers...

not a Schenn lover but I like it for CBJ, having said that it makes sense too for the Caps, agree with your rationale on Gleason

Really like it for the Caps. Schenn might become what Stastny already is that alone is a win. I don't see Schenn being better then Stastny.

Simply put:

I think Schenn will be a better NHL'r than Stastny (and soon).
I think it's the perfect time to pick up Schenn.
We picked up Boyes as a UFA and he can play 2nd line C instead of Stastny.
We had a hole on D and filled it with Gleason (67OV).
We think Olsen is a much better prospect than Rensfeldt

I think the jackets did well here. Not sure I buy all the schenn hype but I'm not a statsny fan either.

All the same, good work getting it done. Both gms seem happy.

I was sniffing around Schenn for some time and love him as a prospect - but I also wonder if he really will be better than a guy like Stastny.

Even if he is the same as Stastny, I get a 67OV dman I can use right now. So to me it's a non issue. Seems like a bit of risk with potential for high reward.

To be honest ... it is not as risky of a deal as it seems. Both teams land someone that can help now... the difference being that Schenn might explode and tip the scales in favour of the Jackets. We would still have a #1 Center that can be flipped for bluechippers down the road.

GM's are so scared to move these prospects, without thinking that you can just get a good one back in the future with a downgrade.

Seems to be a fair deal to me. Schenn is a blue chip prospect that hopefully will turn into Stastny. Gleason brings ratings this year for CBJ to bridge the gap until Schenn has good CPHL ratings.

I'd say it's a fair deal for both teams. Schenn will be something real special one day, while Gleason gets it done right now.

Being that I messed up with Schenn the Caps got a an excellent return in getting a 70+ player. Although, good on the Jackets for landing one of the top prospects and a top 4 D man in Gleason. This is one of those win,win lose later type of deals but a good one. I don't think Schenn will be done moving though.
