Default Motorcycle Import Question

Quick question about buying a bike (or car I suppose) in the US...once I buy the bike by private sale...what do I do about driving it back for registration/insurance?

I assume I call my insurance company and let them know...

Do I have to get some kind of temporary transportation plate? Do I get that from Oregon or Canada?

All the info I can find on the web seems to focus on other importing details.

Thanks in advance.

OK I think I figured it out...

A: get insurance from here
B: Get in transit permit from State of purchase

Sound right?

Different states have different regulations. If you're crossing through multiple states, the in-transit permit from the state of purchase may not be valid in other states.

You need an in-transit permit from the originating state (Oregon), but also need to verify that the permit is valid in each State you pass through. State Govt's in the NW tend to work together, and I'd be amazed if there's any problems.

Have your insurer but a binder in place, drive it to Alberta, get an inspection, get it registered and PICS OR DIDN'T HAPPEN.

OK so its done! Easier than I thought...

Brought the bike back...used my Alberta plates (good for transporting a new vehicle for 14 days apparently and also I don't think they can check plates in the US)

WOOOOoooot!
