Default What a hotel?

Look at the pictures of the rooms, they are better and cleaner than any motel I've stayed at on Hwy1. You even get a personal LCD that swivels.

Looks like it's furnished with the Ikea Prizon series of furniture. About the same size as a bachelor apartment in a new Vancouver highrise, too.

If the shower stall unit isn't too expensive, I'm getting one too.

If I can't afford rent, I will commit a crime in Norway and will be thrown in a swanky "hotel" to live for free!

somehow i was hoping that he would be thrown in a pit..........

there were some nice photos of russell peters in one of the associated galleries - it was unfortunate that they could not have provided audio of some of his jokes........

I think this is going to be a big debate in Norway. Their prison system is entirely set up around principles of rehabilitation, and it's very effective at what it does: they have one of the lowest criminal recidivism rates in the world. For a population that already has a low crime rate, it's a great fit.

But how are they going to feel about their justice and penal systems being ineffective at dealing any real punishment to Breivik? I doubt that they would want to abandon their current overall approach over one extreme incident, but how will they get the closure that they need over the incident?

Here's another photo essay on the prison: jogging with hot scandinavian blondes, learning to ride a unicycle, rock climbing? Yeah, gotta admit, it looks pretty good.

And he'll be out by the time he's in his mid-50s. Probably become a hero to bunch of sicko white supremacists too....makes me kind of sick thinking about it.

Well, it's better than my dorm room in grad school. I guess if my retirement play of investing all my money in PMI doesn't pan out, I can go to Norway and get caught robbing a bank... or move to Selkirk.

This couldn't go in the original thread? I think that is one story that should stay on the front page out of any of them.

That is pretty cushy, in some ways I like the idea, just not for real hardened criminals.

In some way its obviously working in Norway, but it makes me wonder what the real cultural differences are.

That's really not all that different than some of the prisons in Canada and it actually sounds a lot like William Head in Victoria where my friend was an officer. Now it's minimum security prison but up until a few years ago it was a medium security institution housing the type of people that entails.

There aren't really cells, as it's more of a shared apartment kind of arrangement with common living rooms and kitchens; most rooms have TVs and DVD players; it's on the water and there's a fishing pier and an oceanfront sweat lodge as well as walking trails; it has a small golf course, a well stocked library, and the inmates have lots of extracurricular activities including putting on plays for the public. In fact, pretty much every picture in that article about the Norwegian prison has an equivalent at William Head.

Norway's is a little different as that's a maximum security prison and Canada's top level ones are much different, but many of the same principles apply and people would be surprised at what prisons are actually like. Harsh prison conditions haven't really proven to serve anyone well, be it the public, the prison guards, or the inmates themselves so that's why they have some of these "cushy" amenities. That approach won't work for every society but it seems to work in Norway.

That could sell for $250,000 in Vancouver, no joke.
