Interesting story. Maybe because it took place near my hometown of Trochu, or maybe because I graduated with the guy in the story!

Quote:
A father and son in rural Alberta are responsible for the dramatic arrest of an alleged thief they'd been after for months, RCMP say.

Property owner Kris Lynch and his father Tim apprehended a man Wednesday after the younger Lynch returned to his ranch in Trochu, southeast of Red Deer, and saw familiar tire tracks leading to his fuel storage tanks.

...

"He was dumb enough to steal fuel in the middle of the day from a farmer," Kris Lynch told CBC News.

...

The father and son eventually got the man out of the truck and tied him up with a lasso from their barn, he said.

"The guy was wearing pyjama pants and he didn't have underwear … and his pants ended up sliding right down to his ankles," said Lynch.

He said he and his father let the man, "sit there bare-assed in the snow till the cops showed up."

It was humorous for me reading the quotes and picturing him talking to a reporter. It took place about 10-15 km east of the place I grew up at his family's ranch. No wonder the thief panicked, Tim is a scary looking dude.

I hope they don't end up facing some loony charges for apprehending the guy themselves.

Good for them, and good it didn't happen in/near TO else they'd could have been hit with assault charges.

Reminds me of a sign I saw on the highway just south of Lac La Biche a couple weeks ago. One of those portable signs with the yellow letters. Right in front of a farmhouse, wish I knew the backstory.

Heh. I like the fact that their last name is Lynch. Just tie him to the truck and drag him around, then the irony would be complete.

Good story, but I hope this looney doesn't come back to the farm for payback after being released...

You would think if someone was stealing gas that you would put locks on them. Unless its right on the home property.

I know of a few people who have purchased those police tire spikes from the US that have put them near the fuel tanks to stop thieves.

Even a city boy like me knows that the last place that you want to steal from is a farm. You've got 100% chance of there being a gun on site, a bunch of time before the cops will arrive, and farmer that knows both. And, in this case, lassos.
