He got heat for posing with a stack of bills in Vegas. Had nothing to do with race, it was because shortly after he declared bankruptcy and had gambling issues, ###### bag move. Stories about his domestic life, where his wife accused him of stuff just made it easy to pile on as it came so close to his gambling stuff (even if she was proven to be a liar). Acting like an ass in Winnipeg where his teammates couldn't stand him and leaving restaurants without paying, douce bag move.
He can't seem to stay out of the way of trouble. Gets back to Van, ends up in a stupid bikini bar and gets punched. The first thought that comes to mind is WTF is he doing already (until the story comes out that he was sticking up for one of the female staff). He really needs to learn to stay out of these situations. I honestly never heard of any issues in Edmonton, he seemed to take his domestic life more serious and stayed out of trouble.

Yeah, I was thinking this too, it does seem very 'blamey' in the 'I'm not a bad guy, they just dont like me because of my race!'
And yet was he not part of some NHL Diversity Committee and had to be kicked off? And who was it again that threw his clothes in the shower? Oh yeah, another player of colour.
It has nothing to do with his race or colour, the guy is just a genuine piece of ####.

He's hurting the race issue by making these claims. People use this stuff as an excuse to dismiss things based on "playing the race card" using these instances as examples to support their narrative.
Just don't be a dick, no matter what colour you are.
There are lots of people who aren't dicks that face hardship because of their race. I'm sure Kane has in some cases himself, but that's not why the majority of people think he's a ######.

You never heard of any issues while he was with Edmonton because the "state media" in Edmonton would have covered it up. I have no doubt that he got into trouble while playing in Edmonton. It was just never reported on because any media that would paint an Oiler player in a bad light in that city would have their media credentials yanked so fast it would make their heads spin.

They don't even get into all the disturbing allegations against him in Buffalo. He ended up not being criminally charged, but was sued in civil court and paid a monetary settlement to his victim.
He's given a pass or excused for more than what I think most people would be. It's probably like Donald Trump where there is just so much to pile on him that people just start accepting it as nothing.

I didn't want to spend an hour mentioning all the crap he did. He is a ###### bag, his race has nothing to do with that, except in his own, and the authors, head.

“Shortly” being 5-10 years later?
While I agree that he’s brought a lot into himself by the way he’s acted and the things he’s been accused of, I don’t think anyone can say with a straight face that the way he’s been treated throughout his career has “nothing” to do with race. The cash-stack picture is one example (especially the fact that people still bring it up, can anyone recall a picture of another player on social media from 13 years ago off the top of the head?) but there are definitely others, some of which he correctly identified in the article.
I think he’s wrong to chalk more up to the race issue than is there and not take ownership for other things, but I also think it’s wrong to say it has nothing to do with it. Of course it does.

The controversy with the money stack posing was the fact it was during a lockout and IIRC people thought it was insensitive and out of out. Nothing to do with the bankrupcy years later. The original argument might be stupid but that's what it was.

I was completely unaware of Jagr's gambling debts and the $3M taxes he owed the IRS lol.

Yeah, the race thing was weird for the writer to bring up. Not denying that more can and should be done around making hockey truly accessible to all communities, but fans and the media aren't defaulting to some racist lens through which they observed Kane. There was once another guy who looked similar to Kane in Iginla and is one of the most popular Canadian hockey players ever among fans and media across North America and still consistently gets a ton of love, admiration and respect whenever his name comes up in conversations.

Not one of the top 100 players, though.
Iginla was also just about as perfect as can be. I don’t think “look how Iginla acted, just be like him!” is a necessarily fair bar for most average players to reach. Very few do in general.

Kane is one of those players that is easy to hate if he isn’t playing on your team. He would be able to get under the skin of opposing players, making opposing fans hate him.
He has a swagger to his game that fans on the opposite side would call arrogance. I have never been a fan of his since he has never played for a team that I wanted to win.
I remember something about his time in Winnipeg, being a bad teammate (bad dressing room guy). But that was quite a while ago. He may have grown and changed since then.
If he was, and still is a dressing room problem, then i am glad he isn’t a Flame, and am glad he is a Canuck! With that aside, I think someone with his style of play on the ice could be a benefit to many contending teams in the league.

Exactly, Jagr had one negative thing against him. Kane keeps having them, so the past keeps getting brought up.
