So, with the Stars exiting:

The conditional 2026 third-round pick the Flames receive is predicated on Dallas making the Stanley Cup Final. If the Stars bow out before then, the condition is waved and the Flames do not acquire the pick.

When I say that was a lame trade, it truly is very underwhelming! Stop making these dumb conditional agreements on trades! Flames could've actually got Oiler's 2024 first + round pick + Ceci.

I'm not worried about losing that conditional. Grushnikov is gonna be a superstar for us (I feel like now of all times is the time to be blindly optimistic)

Someone mentioned Jamie Benn earlier, that actually pisses me off the most, how he didn't once play like the dirty bastard he is. We know he's capable of cheap shots and hard play, we saw none of that.

The only explanation is that he was scared as hell to get sent to the box over and over again. The refs really did influence the outcome of that series.

Yes, all conditions not met. No extra picks or movement of current ones.

Of course the Flames have to take the outlier cup team as their blueprint for success, instead of drafting for success like all the other teams did

So take on 1x$3.25 to buy up from a 2nd to a 1st. Grushnikov is the difference if he can really play.

Hope we get Tanev back and he raises Grusch to be Tanev Jr.

So you are upset that the Flames could have got the 31st or 32nd pick and a plug who is a cap burden and a borderline NHL dman but instead got a former 48th overall pick and the 61st pick plus whatever the value of 3.25 million in cap space is?

In the 2021 draft the 27th overall pick was traded for the 40th and 51st picks. Suspect one could trade 48 and 61 for the 31st or 32nd pick. In my books the Flames came out ahead by not having Ceci.

What are you talking about? Oilers are not in top 2 in the standings. They never even got to the top 2 at the trade deadline. They're sitting at 21st for the order of the draft. It's a lot better than getting a conditional 3rd, which BTW, they'll never get. Grushnikov is a project that might not even pan out - Ceci's already an NHL 3 line proven D-man. Yeah, the $3.xM cap hit was an issue but who cares if the Flames don't intend to have him in the lineup. He could've been traded. The Oiler's 2024 1st round pick would've added to the other 2 for 2024. I'm not sure what the issue would've been with that trade other than the fact the proposed trade is with the Oilers. It was a way better offer than what the Stars gave to the Flames.

The Oilers pick is 31 or 32...probably more likely to be 32 with Tanev which would be reason enough NOT to do it. Grushnikov might not work out but neither do most 31 or 32nd picks. Also a retention spot and cap space which has value. Oilers trade was worse at the time and in hindsight even moreso.

Yeah. Plus there is the rivalry tax and Tanev probably got some input on where to go.

The late first barely accounts for Ceci who whose contract is one more year. He isn't tradeable or the Oilers would have traded him a while ago. Taking that trade would have opened up cap space for the Oilers next year. That is a lose (you get Ceci) lose (you give Tanev to the Oilers at a discount) lose (you clear over 3M is cap space for them next year) trade.
