Has there ever been a star athlete that went from hero to zero like Rodgers? A decade ago he was probably my favorite player to watch in the NFL, now he's a tin foil hat wearing loser. It will make the season more fun cheering against him and the Jets.

For tampering violations in the Kirk Cousins, Darnell Mooney and Charlie Woerner negotiations, the Atlanta Falcons have lost a 2025 5th round pick and fined $250K.
The message to NFL teams: tamper to your heart's content, because the penalty is a slap on the wrist.

To be fair a quarter million and a 5th round pick is a little more than a slap on the wrist as a 5th round pick in the NFL can be a starting player. Considering the severity of the Dolphins punishment for tampering with Brady I can only assume that there was more grey area to this case limiting the punishment the league could dole out.

Arthur Blank is worth over 7.2 billion. A quarter million to him is a slap on the wrist.

To be fair the Falcons self punished by spending their first round pick on a third round player so the extra 5th is a bit harsh IMO.

Yeah some 5th round picks definitely make it, but I bet the majority do not. Was looking at a chart which is admittedly almost a decade old, but it's showing by Year 3, most 5th round picks are no longer with the team that drafted them (38%). The big % drop seems to occur after round 4.
I just think if you're chasing a premier free agent in week 1 of UFA, you're not going to let a 5th round pick and $250K scare you off tampering, especially if you're offering said UFA tens of millions. If I'm a GM/owner, I'd happily sacrifice that to land a UFA I'm coveting.

Like I said before the Dolphins punishment should be considered as a deterrent. It's clear that the circumstances and/or evidence didn't warrant a steep punishment as this is one area where the NFL hasn't shown to play favorites as they have come down hard on organizations when they have evidence of breaking the rules such as the Patriots several times, Saints, Dolphins, etc.

I saw some post a few weeks back where over their careers to date Gardner Minshew has started 49 games and Lawrence 50 games and Minshew has thrown more TD passes, considerably less INT's and and has a higher QB rating. Now I'm not saying Minshew is better or even a legit starter in this league but if that's the case then this contract doesn't look overly great.

He was pretty vocal about the Jags not signing his 5th year option

Why would I be against the fifth year option? Even if Lawrence had been playing at a league average level (and he pretty much has) the cost of the fifth year option is still meaningfully below what a league average QB contract costs. Now, I have said a lot that I wouldn't feel great signing him long term, and that I'd probably rather play out the fifth year and see what happens there. He hasn't come close to living up to the can't miss QB he was claimed to be, but picking up the fifth year option would have been a no brainier. He'd be acceptable value at that price range.
At this point QB contracts are what they are, besides rookies on poverty deals only Mahomes is truly worth it. Is this contract great right now? Not really. Could it be? Maybe. Do the Jags have no other choice cause if he went to market he'd get this deal for sure, and they'd have to go back into QB draft roulette where the Michael Penix's and Bo Nix's of the world go 50 picks earlier than they should? Yup. Good news for the Jags is that as long as his floor remains what we've seen so far QB desperation will make it easy to trade him later on for a fair return.
