There are a lot of transplanted Northerners in the Carolinas, and there have been a lot of small-town hockey teams in fly-by-night minor leagues. Those things give them a good base to work with. Still, it's a niche sport – but that has its advantages too.

What you don't get down there are the bozos, the casual fans who know nothing about the game but feel obligated to spout off with uninformed opinions. (You know – fans like me.) They're applying their stupidity to football, basketball, or NASCAR, and if they ever accidentally watched five minutes of an NHL game, they gave it up because they couldn't see where the hockeyball was.
