At first glance those numbers aren't good. He is about to turn 20 years old, 6'4'', and close to 200lbs. He should be dominating the USHL as an older bigger player.
However some positives: aside from the first 6 games of the season, he has 10pts in his last 11 games. So maybe just a bad start to the season.

I'm about to turn this "he's played okay but not great" post into a "I didn't know he's actually played that good" post.
Mattson's stats aren't the greatest but when you dig deeper in, they start to look very good. Before we start, just note that Mattson doesn't play on the PP for some reason, which effects his stats.
In terms of 5v5 play (the best area to judge a players' ability on), Mattson ranks as follows (among all USHL forwards):
*Points: 10 (tied for 6th)
*Goals: 6 (tied for 5th)
*Primary Points: (tied for 9th)
Primary Points Per 60 Minutes: 2.18 (14th)
Relative Goals For %: 22.42% (18th)
* every player ranked ahead of him averages more even strength time on ice per game than Mattson.
