No, this is a different thing. Several players around the league have had contracts structured this way. You get your $300,000 no matter what happens, but you don't go over that amount until you have spent a sufficient number of games in the NHL to earn more. With these particular numbers, Ruzicka would earn:
• $300,000 if he spent the entire year in the AHL
• $300,000 if he played up to 25 NHL games (assuming for convenience that he's up for an average number of days per game played)
• More than $300,000 if he played more than 25 NHL games
• The full $800,000 if he spent the entire season with the Flames.
It's then in the club's financial interest to let him have at least a large cup of coffee with the parent team.
