Do you remember how good Backlund was at Sam's age? I remember. I also remember how many, of the fans, wrote him off as an average player.
You make it sound like he will never amount to more than a 3rd liner. You're probably right about him never living up to his draft hype, but where was Craig Conroy as a 23 year old? He was good before, but he was 30 when he had his break-out season. Langkow was 26 when he had his break-thru season and 30 when he finally cracked 30 goals.
I'm not saying he will turn out to be an amazing 1st or a good 2nd line player (because I just don't know), but maybe we shouldn't kid ourselves about thinking we know what he is, as a hockey player.
