It'd help if they started to enforce the rules of what actually constitutes a carry-on instead of letting people bring Harry Potter sized trunks and filling an entire overhead bin with one bag.

Helps to gate check as many early on as possible. Delays can happen when they run out of room late and then a bunch of bags get checked and weight and balance has to be recalculated. Doesn't really make sense cause the same bag is still on the plane, but that's how they do it.
