On Dec. 8, he was named the NHL’s defensive player of the week. His numbers were already sparkling – 6-1-0, 1.71, .928.

Amazing, especially when considering his gear.

Sure, thanks to Thorson, the trim was immaculate – but, as it turned out, the equipment wasn’t even his.

“You know how goaltenders are finicky? The name on the pads was not Kiprusoff, it was Nabokov,” recalled Marcoux. “I said, ‘What’s the deal here?’ And he says, ‘Well, Nabby didn’t like those, so I tried them out and I liked them. So I kept them.'”
