If it's not for family reasons, I am wondering if it has to do with concussions. Perhaps there is something going on with CTE, or he doesn't want to risk any future injuries that are brain-related. Dude has been concussed before.
Just speculating of course. Could just as easily be he lost his passion for the sport and let the staff know he's not interested in continuing a playing career. I can respect that; even pro athletes know when it's time for a change.
