Tkachuk, I think you'll find, is being used on the 3rd line mostly when they get the first shift after a penalty expires. Since he is rested at such times, and Backlund and Frolik are not, this is a sensible thing to do.
I agree that RW is an area of need, mind you. But it's not a need that you're likely to fill on the current market. Of the top 20 players on TSN's Trade Bait list (as of today), 11 are LW or C/LW and
not one is a RW. The only RW on the list are Shaw, Nyquist, Comeau, and Bobby Ryan. At $7.25m for 4 more years Ryan is a non-starter, and Comeau isn't the answer to any of the Flames' problems. If you want to fill that hole at the deadline, you're buying in a very tight seller's market.
