I think a lot of it is the nature of the sport. They're constantly going from basically zero to full exertion in a split second, then back to nothing. There's no slow run to sprinting like basketball, or mild skating to sprinting like in hockey. Nothing to everything. That's got to be torture on ligaments and muscles.
