Kind of got it to work, for anyone else:
Go to Help/Bonus > Player Search/Comparison > Check Players or Goalies > Make Condition 1 "Is not in a Team" > Hit Search
This gives a list of unassigned players, scroll down to their name and that will at least tell you if they are unassigned. It's where I found my 2 guys.
