There's a reason that Roberts is so concerned by this Alito decision beyond the overturning of long-established precedent. The decision itself is poor jurisprudence, and a myriad of other precedents will be affected by the hamfisted way it was decided.
The partisan nature of the SC has been dialled up to 11 in the last few years. The GOP is to blame.
