This horse was 14 years old. He very likely suffered a heart attack. It happens...although most live much longer. Just like humans.
The family is devastated as they have had that horse for more than a decade. These animals are treated like pets, because they pretty much are. Had they not been racing? Would have been gone years ago.
Its always hard to see animals go down, but it's literally what they were bred to do and what they enjoy most. Thoroughbreds run... and then they want to run some more. These guys allow them to do so for many years after they would otherwise be dead.
