Actually, the Flames have become recipients of NHL equalization payments, as reported in September

I believe that on the books, the Flames are currently reporting a loss based on operating costs and general revenue. However, this doesn't mean that Edwards will be rushing to sell the team, as the value of holding any NHL team is increasing, and so even if Edwards has to pump a few million into the team each year, the increase in the value of the asset is offsetting those losses.
Of course, $20 million or so for the next expansion would also help to cushion the blow...
