If I only had 4 days and wanted to see Venice, I'd spend the whole time there. It's really neat, and there's quite a bit to see/do. But from your description that doesn't sound like how you prefer to travel. I agree Florence is nice, and the leaning tower of Pisa is nearby there as well. I'd probably prefer Florence to Milan if it was me.
Also, if you want to take a day trip to Venice you have to register online and pay a fee, just something to remember to do.
