If, as is often the case, the NHL pendulum swings back to a heavier style of hockey given St. Louis’ relentless, physical style of play, then the 6-foot-2 Hathaway will be the kind of free agent who will be attractive to teams looking to add in the bottom six at a short term and dollar. “He’s got that grit,” one longtime scout and player said of Hathaway, an undrafted native of Naples, Florida. “He’s got that intangible of work ethic and toughness.” That said, he is more a place-holder in your lineup than a core player, the scout added. “He bridges that space and can do the job,” while your younger prospects get some seasoning outside the NHL. In short, the scout said, “he’s a replaceable player. And we all have those guys.”
