Pretty odd, qualifying offers expire at 5:00 pm on July 15, 2018. So he would have had, at worst, a qualifying offer of, $875,000 NHL/$70,000 AHL on the table. Instead he reportedly signed a $700,000 NHL/$80,000 AHL contract.

Hardly seems that $10,000 extra guaranteed money makes up for the additional $175,000 he could have made as an NHL player. Even if he was up for for 3 games (~10 of 185 NHL days) he would make more with his qualifying offer.

But accepting a $700,000 NHL contract cascades next year hurting his potential contract as his qualifying offer becomes $735,000 instead of what would have been $918,750.

So either Klimchuk and his agent don't believe he's going to be playing in the NHL really at all, or, what I believe is happening, is the Flames are in such a cap crunch mode right now to sign the RFAs without having to buyout Brouwer that they told Klimchuk that his likelihood of making the team is better if he's making $700,000 over $875,000.

I hadn't penciled him in on the team at all, but seeing this contract, I believe he is now a stronger contender to do so.

And just from a practical standpoint. Klimchuk has an $875,000/$70,000 on the table. If his agent called up Treliving and said Klimchuk would sign a $875,000/$80,000 that hardly seems like something to squabble over if they expected him to stay in the AHL (ultimately giving him $80,000 anyways). Seems like the contract is designed to limit the NHL cap which makes the most sense from both parties if they believe he's actually going to make the NHL with that contract.
