Francis saying some "players" did care if they won or lost, it was all about their stats ... he seemed to imply more than just goals and assists ... possession?

Everyone reacts to failure differently, as well as the person attempting interpretig said players, so it's a pretty vauge statement and generalization.
But I'll take a shot at it; I think he's getting at some players, besides goals and assists, wanted to make sure their status on the team, as a 1st line player (rw) or 2nd line player, or 1st pp unit player etc was very significant to some, even as the ship started to sink. Players trying to protect thier place in the hierarchy, for next year, for stats, for the next contract (so again, stats) or simply for ego and entitlement as to where they think they fit.
