I think it's pretty similar to flights. I'd probably start looking now, about 2 months ahead. You could always try Priceline or Hotwire but probably too early for hotel owners to be offering up June deals.
Waiting until last minute is a gamble, only the supply and demand Gods know if there will be a need for hotel owners to offer lower prices.
I would think June would be a fairly popular time to visit NYC.
