Someone here years ago recommended this restaurant on the downtown pier. It's fantastic.

If you can squeeze in a detour, and drive back via the island/lower mainland, the ferry from Anacortes to Sidney is pretty cool, threading in and around a bunch of the San Juan Islands. Though you'd be adding extra time and expense with a couple ferries, its very scenic.
